€75 million Housing Adaptation Grant Fund Announced
The Minister of State for Planning & Local Government Peter Burke has announced an increase in funding for the Housing Adaptation Grant scheme in all 31 counties. This is very positive news for people experiencing mobility issues at home and not in a financial position to cover the full cost of the necessary works.
Grants of up to €30,000 are available to assist people in carrying out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs, up to €8,000 to assist older people to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out and up to €6,000 for mobility aids.
Applicants are means tested and the total household income is accessed, not just that of the individual applying for the grant. Your local authority will disregard some household incomes, e.g. Carer’s Allowance. Contact us to find out more or visit Gov.ie for further details.
What works does the Housing Adaptation Grant cover?
The type of work carried out will depend on each individuals needs but may include:
- a stair lift
- bathroom adaptations, e.g., level access shower, downstairs toilet, etc.
- grab rails
- level access platform ramp and outdoor railings

The grant does not cover the VAT element of the bill, currently 13.5%, however, this is fully refundable from Revenue and we can assist with sending the required documents to Revenue to ensure you get a full refund returned to you as quickly as possible.
Who is eligible for the grant?
Older people, people with reduced mobility and people with a disability can apply for the Housing Adaptation Grant. A homeowner may also apply on behalf of a person who fits the criteria and is also a member of the same household.
